From The Director:
When we selected this musical, I was excited and a little bit nervous. You see, even though I’d heard of it, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Like many people my age, I’m marginally familiar with the old black and white television show, and I’ve seen bits and pieces of the 1990-something film starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Houston. As I read through the script for the first time, I kept an open mind (as one should when perusing) and found myself laughing out loud - a lot. I love a good comedy, and I love musicals. This show has it all: a great story with incredibly catchy songs.
Perhaps one of the strongest themes of this production can best be summed up in one of Grandma’s lines: “Define normal.” The Addams and Beineke families each have their own definition of “normal,” and the challenges to their respective rationales and traditions give us a lot to think (and laugh) about along the way. In addition to the humor, there are some very poignant moments in the show. We witness Gomez’s struggle to explain the ups and downs of love to Wednesday in “Happy Sad” and Pugsley wrestle with the fear of a changed sibling relationship in “What If.”
Over the last few months, I’ve watched even the most experienced cast members learn and grow, and I am so proud of the hard work that everyone has put into this production. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this production happen. I’m honored to be a part of the Trinity High School Performing Arts Department, and I hope you enjoy watching this show as much as I have enjoyed directing it.
