Radium Girls - October 06 - October 08, 2022

Director's Note

The Radium Girls were important in our country's history of labor laws.  Everyone has a right to a safe workplace and community.  Still today we see issues of workers or communities standing up to corporations as they fight for their health.  Perhaps it is my Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in Social Sciences that draws me to this work of historical fiction. I also felt strongly that this was an important story for our students and community to hear.  I was drawn to the directing challenge of bringing a play to the stage that is written in a cinematic style using both realistic and presentational elements to tell the story.

This play is the first non-musical at JP Taravella since the pandemic.  It provides a great challenge for our actors to develop multiple characters. At the same time, it offers an opportunity to study physicality, vocal differences as well as objectives and tactics to bring to life each character’s function in this extraordinary piece of theatrical literature.

I'm so proud of the fact that this show and the JP Taravella Theatre program is student driven.  Every element you see (costumes, props, scenery, lights, sound, makeup) was researched, designed and executed by students.

Not only did these students learn about The Radium Girls, they learned to communicate better, collaborate and bring an artistic vision to life.  I hope you enjoy the production.
