Our musical this evening is set in 1927, Hollywood, USA
Just as the turbulent transition is being made from silent films to`talkies', actors, directors and crew alike all have trouble adapting to this emerging technology and its novel demands.
The talents and gifts that created and sustained stardom in slient films and what is now demanded by this new era of sound come into sharp conflct.
Don (Calvin Velgersdyk) and Lina (Evie Danz) have been cast repeatedly as a romantic couple, but when their latest film is remade into a musical, only Don has the voice for the new singing part.
Despite hours of practice with a diction coach, Lina still sounds terrible, and Kathy (Mercy March), a bright young aspiring actress, is hired to record over her voice so her star can continue to burn bright even as her voice grates like fingernails on a blackboard.
But what about Kathy? Will she remain in the shadows or assume her place in the spotlight? Will Lina thwart her? Does Don even care?
Thus, the scene is set for a night of overt ambition, simmering jealousy, subterfuge, contractual wrangling and some memorable songs as you join the Avail Academy Middle School and their exuberant performance of
Singin' in the Rain
We promise...you'll be singin' all the way home...
"Let the stormy clouds chase.
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singing,
singing in the rain"
