Mamma Mia - December 07 - December 10, 2023

Wylie ISD

 Director's Notes

"Without a song or a dance what are we, so I say, 'thank you for the music, for giving it to me.'"

At the heart of MAMMA MIA the musical is a mother-daughter relationship that is facing new challenges.  Sophie struggles with identity and longs to know who her father is before she walks down the aisle.  After raising her daughter as a single mom, Donna is forced to recognize that her Sophie is no longer a child, but a young woman who has found the love of her life.  In addition to familial relationships, the show examines life-long friends and romantic relationships that stand the tests of time.  We witness these beloved characters question their identities and overcome obstacles by trusting and choosing one another.  This show is a celebration of love and different types of families - the members we are assigned at birth and the ones we choose for ourselves.

I chose this musical for my class of seniors.  We have an amazing group of seniors who lead the department as actors, vocalists, and dancers.  I wanted to pick a musical that would showcase all of our girls and their strengths.  I'm so grateful to Peyton Bourland for bringing this show to life through her fantastic choreography.  I'm endlessly grateful for Chris Shoemake and Jaclyn Mills and for all of their contributions to the technical aspects of this show.  Thank you to Mrs. Berry and Wylie administration for their support of our department.

When I think of MAMMA MIA, I think about cozying up on the couch with my sister while we sing along to our favorite ABBA songs.  This movie has been a favorite that I've shared with my mom and sister for years and constant in my life through the many ups and downs of high school, college, and navigating life post-graduation. I dedicate my experience working on this show to my mom and sister, Emma - the two closest women in my life who are both dancing queens!

This musical has been a dream to direct!  The music is timeless and the story, however nonsensical it may be, is nostalgic, fun, and empowering.  We hope you enjoy MAMMA MIA the Musical!
