Disney's High School Musical - May 22 - May 23, 2021

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High

 Director's Notes

This past year has shown how resiliant our theatre program is.  We suffered a crushing loss when our Spring 2020 play was cancelled right before opening night, but we held onto that amazing show and were finally able to perform it in front of an audience.  These students on stage have worked hard to bring this amazing show to life and have dedicated many hours and emails convincing me that it was worth the risk if I would consider choosing it for our show.  We have a cast that truly loves the work they are doing on stage for you and loves being part of something so meaningful to them.  They knew the dialogue and lyrics to the songs even before we truly considered this show as the end to our unconventional 2020-2021 school year.  I will admit, it was not my first choice, but watching the cast grow together on stage and truly embrace the message that it is okay to be different and be true to yourself.  It has been a pleasure to work with this group of students, and I hope you enjoy their performance as much as I have enjoyed helping their vision come to the stage.

It has been such a privilege to work with you all again this year. Seeing so many new faces this year has really brought hope that our program is growing. I know how much the directors poured their heart and soul into this musical, and I can only say that the cast has poured just as much dedication and persistence in getting this show off the ground. If I had to describe this cast and crew, working so diligently on this musical, it would be this: You have really shown me what it is to work towards your dreams, take them. Thank you for taking me on this journey and remember, we are all in this together!

Love,

High School Musical premiered on January 20th, 2006 when I was a sophomore in high school. I belted all of the songs, swooned over Zac Effron, and learned the dances in my living room. Therefore, when it was decided that WBHS was performing High School Musical this year, I was ecstatic to say the least. Choreographing this musical has been an absolute dream. I was able to put my own spin on classics like Get'cha Head in the Game, and I was still able to bring in the original choreography for We're All in this Together. Harry, our student choreographer has also been phenomenal in leading the team, and putting his creative spin on dances. Without his help, this would have been an impossible undertaking. Our leads and chorus have really put an incredible amount of work in, and their dedication shows. Drew, Jaydon, Elisabeth, Kane, Josh, Taylor, Jordan, and Mary have embodied their characters on stage and have taken me back to my high school days when I fell in love with this show all over again. To our seniors: Sam, Eli, Ryu, Lya, Halle, and Elisabeth, I have enjoyed every minute of working with all of you throughout your high school careers, and I hope that you remember these times with fond memories. Remember, when we reach, we can fly.
