The Little Mermaid - February 29 - March 02, 2024

Wilmington Christian School

 TALKBACK DISCUSSION GUIDE

We hope you have enjoyed The Little Mermaid as much as the cast and crew here at WCS has enjoyed performing it.  Now that the curtain has closed on our nautical adventure, why not keep the thought-waves churning?  Spend a few moments offstage diving deeper into some of the themes explored onstage.

For Lower School Students:

  1. What did you like most about the show tonight?
  2. Who was your favorite character?  Why?
  3. Ariel is convinced she belongs in the human world in spite of being a mermaid.  Why do you think we get jealous of others or wish we were someone else?
  4. What does God tell us about how He created us?
  5. Do you think Ariel and Eric are really “in love?”  Is love a feeling you have about someone or the actions you take to help another person?
  6. In the Bible, Jesus describes true love this way: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)  How did Jesus show His love for us?
  7. In The Little Mermaid, who demonstrated this kind of sacrificial love?  Why?
  8. What are some ways that you can show this kind of love to others?

For Upper School Students:

  1. What did you like most about the show tonight?
  2. Ariel is convinced she belongs in the human world in spite of being a mermaid. Do you see any parallels to that in our world today?
  3. What is the difference between wanting to improve yourself (by learning something new or practicing a skill to get better) and wanting to be someone completely different?
  4. What are some of the dangers or pitfalls of going against our God-given design?
  5. In what ways is King Triton a good parent?  In what ways is he a flawed parent?
  6. Ariel cannot see the logic behind (or benefit from) the rules her father gives.  What happens as a result of her rebellion?   What are some restrictions that you think are illogical or unreasonable?   What could be the reason behind these guardrails?
  7. Do you think Ariel and Eric are really “in love?”  Is love a feeling you have about someone or the actions you take to help another person?
  8. Jesus commands us to, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” (Luke 6:27-28).  If love is a feeling, is this really possible?  If love is an action, then what are some ways you can live this out with the difficult people in your life?
