Shrek The Musical Jr - June 08 - June 09, 2018

West Orient Middle School

 End Notes

When we think about Shrek, it is a throwback to our childhood. The film came out in 2001, and we experience so much nostalgia because we grew up with these characters. It's so exciting for us to put this show to stage.

When the students start to develop character and have fun creating their own ideas we have these amazing moments...the funny voices, acting choices, dancing, faces and ideas are so fun for them to develop. We get particularly proud when they conquer a difficult part of the show. The success that shows on their faces and their excitement to come back to the next rehearsal, after practicing hard at home, is contagious. A special shout out goes to the younger cast, who work tirelessly at home and have seen their efforts paying off!

But let's talk about the older cast members for a moment. They have really stepped up in leadership this year and been supportive of each other and other cast members. They have learned to "keep love in and gossip out", which is a big goal in the performing arts programs at Barlow. Being mentors, we are also put on the spot as leaders. It's terrifying, knowing that we have the ability to make such a big impact with these students. At the same time, it makes us strive to constantly be the best version of ourselves that we can be.

Working with 60 students is quite the experience! They are all so energized to learn each day. They give their all even when they are tired, hot or have been at rehearsal for hours...they just keep giving more. Through it all, they have accepted direction from us without pause. They have never made us feel like high schoolers, but true directors. They believe in us no matter how old we are and never get mad at us for making a mistake. They forgive and forgive and forgive, and keep working hard for us! They also don't care about the "status quo". We are accepted, loved and cared for no matter who we are. For us, high school is a place where students don't always feel safe or supported by their peers. These students love us unconditionally and don't care about how popular we are, what type of clothes we wear, how many friends we have etc.

When this show is over, there are so many things that we will miss. Everyone is so nice to us. We have inside jokes, hugs, love, laughter and friendships. We will even miss the small things; sharing their food, asking us (one million) questions, and the learning process in general. We are so happy for the opportunity to teach and that these kids will be well-prepared for the next level.

They are the future! We can't wait to see them shine at Barlow and beyond. Between all of us (directors to students) we are changing each other's lives in the process for the better, because we believe in each other. Yes, we are directing them, but they are directing our lives. We are becoming better humans because of these Orient students, and we couldn't be happier to be a small part of their journey.
