I know what you're probably thinking...

Really? They made a SpongeBob MUSICAL? Oh boy...what am I in for tonight?

I had the same reaction as you several years ago when I was first introduced to the show. I was shocked that the musical was nominated for 12 Tony Awards in 2017- could this show really be that good? A student of mine at the time encouraged me to listen to the soundtrack, and after that, I was sold.

Unlike some other shows that are based on characters in existing media, I love how this show makes its characters very human, in that we desperately relate to their struggle. While this is a "kids" show, it has a lot of poignant things to say about things like climate change, and the current political climate in which we all now live. At its heart, this is a show about community- if we can't live and work together to face an existential threat, then we're already exterminating ourselves as a species.  That's a pretty complicated message for a "kids" show.  Luckily, it is done in such a smart way that we still catch all of the jokes, and see our favorite bits from the TV show.

After all that we've been through as a community and a society these last few years, I truly hope that we bring some joy into your lives tonight.  We hope to inspire you to go forth and live every day like it's "the best day ever."

Thank you, and enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

Mike Sherman
