Lindsay Price wrote this play using mythology stories set in a circus setting. The Greek Geeks are performers who love mythology and the circus. The two worlds are combined. Tonight’s performance is theatricalism at its highest. The show brings together a group effort to tell the individual stories in a new, creative and whimsical manner.
Theater is a great medium to learn many life skills. By involvement in a theatrical production students develop skills in creativity, time management, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and confidence. This show was chosen for its multiple roles, ensemble work, educational value, and opportunities to develop theatrical skills. It gives students an opportunity to shine, take on leadership roles, and develop their confidence in performance. I believe all of our students in this show have grown in these aspects as many of them are stepping up to take on larger roles.
We are so blessed to have such great participation and enthusiasm for theater in our school. Part of this comes from the supportive community and the many people who contribute to our program. Every year when I look towards the fall play, I try to pick a show that will showcase the talents and strengths of our students. After going through many plays this summer, Circus Olympus seemed like the best choice.
The approach to the show is what alumnus Sophie Toal-Schulte aptly called, “Kitschy” in her notes to the cast last Saturday. According to dictionary.com the definition of Kitschy is “something of tawdry design, appearance, or content created to appeal to popular or undiscriminating taste”. The “kitch” in the show is that these stories from mythology are presented in a manner that all audiences can get meaning from the stories. The ostentatious showy nature of the performance, lines and characters are shown in the outlandish costumes. It is not meant to be a literal interpretation of the stories. Instead, we use theatricalism to bring the stories to life on stage. The actors all wear the Greek Geek tye dye shirts and become the characters with various embellishments.
We hope that you will enjoy the fruits of our efforts as you enter the circus! Hie Hie Hie!
