One of my favorite things about theater is knowing that we're creating the same stories in the same way that people have been experiencing live performances for hundreds of years. Inspired by John and David's work, much of the direction of this show is pulled from commedia dell'arte, the slapstick performing arts style that developed in Italy in the 1600s. You see commedia's stock characters, physical bits and utterly delightful silliness in everything from Shakespeare to cartoons and even the modern musical. As we've developed this piece, we were thrilled to discover how well the familiar tropes fit with this new work. I am infinitely grateful to the writers, composer and performers for the opportunity to mesh the old with the brand new—and grateful to you, our audience, for sharing in this premiere with us!
