 About the Production

Chicago has solidified its place in cultural history. Bob Fosse's original 1975 production starring Chita Rivera and Gwen Verdon was popular but clearly ahead of its time. Fosse's production lambasted celebrity culture and manipulation of the press and court system in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the Nixon Presidency. Yet it wasn't until the 1997 revival and 2001 Oscar-winning film that audiences not only embraced this cynical view of American life, but they openly celebrated it. Since then, Chicago has become the longest-running revival and the second-longest running show in Broadway history.

The enduring legacy of Chicago may have as much to do with American culture as the Fosse style. The very construction of the musical numbers and the stage narrative dictate homage to the first EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). From the  "Merry Murderesses" to the smooth Billy Flynn and the clearly corruptable justice system have become central cultural themes, the catchy tunes draw the audience in. Before you know it, you find yourself tapping your foot and humming along with a band of "Merry Muderesses" and cheering on the exploits of Roxie and Velma as they crush social and gender norms.

Today, notorious criminals often gain cult followings, book deals, and even movie adaptations of their stories that we voyeuristically view from the obtrusive glow of our cellphones. Chicago is a funhouse mirror of our society, distorting and exaggerating us in ways that reveal uncomfortable truths. Its enduring popularity and relevance stem from its ability to adapt these critiques to each new era, showing us that while the specifics may change, the fundamental issues of media influence, celebrity culture, and gender politics remain as pertinent as ever. As we navigate a world of influencers, viral sensations, and curated online identities, the show reminds us to look critically at the spectacle and consider what lies beneath the razzle-dazzle.
