There are many avenues to explore in this rich and varied work. Though the music is often the main reason people remember the show, CANDIDE may be one of the most potent satires in stage history. And while I love the show, what originally compelled me to work on this project was The Village Light Opera Group itself.
The “Village” of VLOG once referred to Greenwich Village, but today it more likely means our membership. For over 80 years we’ve been tripping hither and thither through New York’s vibrant theater scene. Along the way, we make friends, meet our soul mates, and create precious memories.
This community, this village, works together toward an important mission—to make theater come alive for you, our members and patrons, as well as for communities with limited access to Broadway. We’re here to tell stories and rejoice in the process of doing so. Each show this season has glorious music and themes rooted in friendship, love, and community—the very fiber of what holds VLOG together.
It is not easy being a nonprofit community theater in this commercially- and artistically-rich town. Despite limited time and resources, VLOG proves, just like Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, that with unlimited heart and talent, we can put on any show in any barn. We look forward to another 80 years of doing just that.
By being a member or a donor to VLOG, you are living up to the ideals of our show today. VLOG is working to make our garden grow. Join us!
AND LET US TRY BEFORE WE DIE
TO MAKE SOME SENSE OF LIFE
WE’RE NEITHER PURE NOR WISE NOR GOOD
WE’LL DO THE BEST WE KNOW
WE’LL BUILD OUR HOUSE AND CHOP OUR WOOD
AND MAKE OUR GARDEN GROW
