Director's Note
Newsies has been my favorite musical since I discovered it in high school. The endless dance numbers, Alan Menken’s heartfelt music, and the historical truth in the story entranced me. I’ve been biding my time, waiting for the right moment to see my dream onstage.
I had high expectations for the cast to perform my favorite show. I required highly energetic and challenging dance numbers, emotional and technical singing, and acting that gave respect to the real people who experienced this protest in New York. This isn’t the junior version of the show, it’s the full broadway length with all the intricate singing. I am thrilled to share that our cast met and exceeded my expectations. I am so excited for you to see all of their hard work come to life!
Beyond the dancing and singing, the bond between the Newsies needed to be strong in order for them to endure their challenges. Our cast and crew bonded both on and offstage. This has truly been one of the kindest casts I have worked with. Everyone has been lovely, encouraging each other at every turn. This year we have several students from schools we have never had before, spanning about 12 schools in total. Many of the kids didn’t know each other before the show. It’s been a beautiful experience for me to foster their community and watch their friendships bloom.
Thank you to all the cast, crew, and volunteers for your kindness, respect, generosity, and for being a part of our VYP family.
Love,
