VTG was founded with the sole purpose of producing challenging and high-quality independent theatre. In VTG's first three seasons it produced three american classics, three original full length productions and four theatre festivals. Since moving to The Chain in November 2012, we have produced an additional four mainstage shows, been host to several other companies and curated two additional festivals. We have served over 75 playwrights and given hundreds of actors the opportunity to work on their craft. We have also displayed the work of five visual artists in our Sisu Gallery. We are indded doing our best to make The Chain a multidisciplinary arts community center
Two of our mainstage shows, Tim Nolan's WHAT'S IN A NAME and Leslie Bramm's VENUS AND MONA, were developed through our Minor Variations Lab. This unique program takes previously produced, often award winning shows, and along with the playwright redevelops them after they have already had the benefit of a production. Though the lab does not necessarily culminate in a full production, we were so enthusiastic about these two plays that we decided to fully stage them. Both shows were extraordinarily well received by audiences and critics. In our Fall Harvest Festival last year we cultivated three additional plays and premiered several new one acts as well. We also produced several events ourside the Chain: EINSTEIN by Jay Prasad at The Theatre at St. Clement's, SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY in Greenwood Cemetery, and in conjunction with the NYC Parks Department we developed a Halloween event that amazed (and terrified) several hundred families. We also curated the first Chain NYC Film Festival, which ran for two weeks.
But we are not resting on our laurels. We are in the final stages of preparation for our next two festivals, our Unchained Festival in June and the second installment of our Chain NYC Film Festival in August.
Our sincerest hope is that The Chain will be a staple to both our community of NYC theatre-makers, and to our local LIC community, where we reside. If you are interested in helping us continue our mission please speak with a member of our team after the show, or check out our web site at www.variationstheatregroup.com.
