Hello Theatre Fans,
I am thrilled to have been hired as the Fall Play Director. It's been a real treat to work with the students at Upper St. Clair High School. Their dedication to perfecting their craft is remarkable. I am hopeful that you will be impressed with their performance.
Notes on the Process:
Not being familiar with the acting talents of the forty plus students who expressed an interest in participating, I conducted a preliminary audition and called back eighteen of the top-scoring students. The Theare Gods smiled down on me as I looked for a play to accommodate all the chosen students. Voila: Look Homeward, Angel.
Notes on the Play:
Thomas Wolfe, the auther, was born in October 1900 in Ashville, North Carolina. He first attended the University of North Carolina at age 16, and then Harvard University, before moving to New York City in 1923. It was there that he wrote his most popular work, Look Homeward Angel in 1929, an autobiographical piece centered on his alter ego Eugene Gant.
The play opened on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Octover 28, 1927 and ran for a total of 564 performances, starring Jo Van Fleet and Anthony Perkins. Ketti Frings, the playright, won the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. The production received many Tony nominations.
