Last June, several members of the TRHS Drama council went to see a production of Urinetown put on by the Pocatello Summer Community Theatre at ISU. Several of these students knew of the show, but for many it was their first time hearing the music, let alone seeing it. I was able to have the incomparable experience of seeing their candid reactions to the humor and outragous twist and turns of plot. Their enjoyment and subsequent discussions about the show and its themes made me realize what an amazing experience it would be for us to give them the opportunity present the show themselves.
Approaching the principal with the script was a little daunting. I knew, as do the characters in the show, that the title was a little hard to get past. In the words of Little Sally, "The title's awful." However, we have had nothing but support from the administration and the community. We want to express how grateful we are as a department, cast, council, and teachers that we have had all of the love and support from all of you.
Urinetown is a crazy satire using an outrageous premise to discuss important topics. It is filled with wit and humor that will cause you to laugh out loud all throughout as it constantly smashes the standard tropes of musical theatre along the way.
We would like to thank everyone for supporting these amazing musicians, singers, dancers, actors, and technicians. This production is a massive collaborative effort, and the support of parents, school administration, and the community is evident. These students would not be able to be here without you.
