Next to Normal earned the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical Score for composer Tom Kitt and a 2010 Pulitzer Prize with lyricist and book writer Brian Yorkey.
My passion for theatre has only grown through this amazing and extremely challenging process of bringing Next to Normal to life, as a student-led group, learning and discovering, with very limited resources.
These are complex and emotional roles.
Mom has been suffering for a very long time.
Dad is hopelessly optimistic that things are going to get better. He is outwardly perfect.
The son is the perfect child.
The daughter is living in her brother's shadow.
Dr. Fine and Dr. Madden are played by the same actor showing the fusing together of all doctors in Diana's mind.
Henry is, well, Henry.
There is a lot going on in every moment on set. I designed and built the stage to be in separate parts because, often times, there are overlapping scenes where we see different aspects of the characters' lives, all at once.
Nothing encapsulates what this show means to me more than the words that Natalie sings-
"I don't need a life that's normal-
that's way too far away.
But something next to normal
would be okay."
Take it all in
Know that you are making a difference
Enjoy the show
