White Christmas - November 23 - December 02, 2018

The Theatre Downstream

 Directors' Notes

Mounting one of the most beloved Christmas movies of all time as a stage play is an intimidating prospect! Bing, Rosemary, Danny, and Vera-Ellen have confidently left behind some gigantic shoes to fill. Not to mention the snow! Will it snow on stage? Can it snow on stage? Who can we get to play each role with the same spirit of the film, yet bring their own personality to the project?

As soon as the auditions were over, we felt our own confidence rise that we were keeping the legacy alive, while adding our own TTD flair. Brian, Sharla, Keith, and Laura didn't even blink as they put on the shoes left by Hollywood legends and made the roles their own.

Our supporting cast also inhabit their roles like they were born to play them. Liz in the expanded role of the busy-body housekeeper Martha and Brian Stivers as the General trade barbs like seasoned veterans; and Reagan as the young granddaughter lights up the stage.

As per usual, the ensemble is hard-working and enthusiastic, with many former leads (Annie, Dorothy, and Jane Banks to name just a few) happily playing minor roles. That is part of what we feel make our shows so successful. TTD actors trade turns in the spotlight and support each other through every moment of every show. They also work very, very hard. What you see tonight is the culmination of hundreds of hours of singing, dancing, acting, and constructing sets all for nothing more than the intense feeling of camraderie and the reward of your laughter, tears, and applause. Please be sure to reward them well.

Sharla has pulled double-duty as Music Director, and the singing is, as her reputation would indicate, top-notch. Brian (ably assisted by Keith and John) has also filled the dual role of Set Designer/Lead Construction, and it would be difficult to find someone who works harder than he does to ensure the success of every show. Liz (assisted by Cheryl, Mandy, and Stacie) faced and conquered the challenge of assembling over 100 stunning costumes. Megan's choreography is beautiful to behold, and Lori (assisted by Donna) is truly the glue that holds the entire show together.

Our thanks, as always, go out to our dedicated board, both past and present and to you, our patrons, for supporting us, and for encouraging us to continue to follow our dreams of creating broadway-style entertainment in a rural setting.

As with every stage adaptation, there are differences between the film and what you will see tonight. Some songs remain true to the film, some are sung by other characters, and some by the entire ensemble - but the spirit remains the same.

As to if it will snow...well...you'll just have to wait and see!

Now, as they say in show business, on with the show!!
