From the Director
When we were discussing what our next project should be, I felt like it needed to be something that addressed our issues in this very moment now abruptly and with no apologies whatsoever. Lucikly, Heathers the Musical landed in that spot when we needed it most. When we think back to the 1989 cult classic, we think of it's dark comedy and the ever so talented Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. We never thought about how a dark comedy could turn real in just a few decades after it's release. While working on this production, I have had the honor of working with so many talented individuals and am so lucky to have been able to work with so many artists of different ages with the same goal for the production in mind. I truly believe I could not have worked with a better cast, even through road blocks and bumps in the road. While not only just physically plowing through this process with grace, these actors were able to tackle one of the hardest and most intricate scores I could have come across in modern musical theatre. Throughout the past few months, I have been reflecting on what Heathers truly means and while it's so easy to focus on it's confrontation of negative influences in our society such as bullying, harrassment, intimidation, cliques, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. I also found it can be just as easy to look at the reinforcement against such darkness through the themes evoked such as inclusion, kindness, acceptance, self love, and treating others with dignity and respect. One of the most important lines throughout the show I feel is Veronica's line after McNamara is harassed endlessly: If you were happy every day of your life you wouldn't be a human being, you would be a game show host. It's a true lesson to learn that you won't be happy every single day, but it's also important to realize that it's totally valid to not be happy all the time. As you watch our production tonight, I would like you to leave with a sense of understanding towards both youth today and also how important communication is between our generation gaps. Thank you for supporting the arts in the community and make sure to spread the word of this amazing show.
