Disney's Beauty and the Beast - November 26 - November 27, 2016

The School of Performing Arts

 End Notes

A Note from the Dramaturg

Beauty and the Beast was one of the last Disney films that I saw in the theatre when I was a girl.  I was just at that age when Disney cartoons were for “little kids”.  Now that I have children of my own I get to re-visit the magic of children’s films through the eyes of my boys, but Beauty and the Beast will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the last films I saw in my own childhood.

I remember watching Belle, on a ladder, glide across the library shelves in her little French town – reminding us that books give us freedom.  Books can lead us on incredible adventures, right in our own homes.  Adventure is all around us in big and little ways.  “I want adventure in the great wide somewhere.”  Will we be brave enough to begin our own adventures?  Starting a new grade, switching careers, sitting next to the kid in the lunchroom who doesn’t seem have a friend.  Adventures are what we make of them.

Bravery comes in all shapes and sizes.  Belle is brave to stay with the Beast to save her father.  The Beast is brave when he finally can admit that he loves – loves not only Belle, but his entire household who has remained under the spell with him.  He is granted a new beginning with his life and the lives of those he loves!  Oh what most of us would do for a new beginning with our loved ones!  Instead we embrace the present and head out the door every day to begin a new adventure ~ out in the great wide somewhere.

Enjoy this magical adventure of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast!
