The Intrepid Theatre

 Director's Note

RENT is such a unique show. It is a story suspended in a moment of unfinished brilliance; a rough draft. It welcomes you into a found family of (flawed, messy, authentic, incredible) people, and makes you fall in love with them.

We’ve put this production together in true Bohemian style: with borrowed rehearsal spaces (thanks U of M, Good Beans, FCP and June’s Flowers!), called-in favors (seriously, Sarah, if I have another kid and you want it, it's yours), and a lot of duct tape and prayers. We are all wearing too many hats and running on too little sleep, but we have put our all into this piece of art - and we are Over The Moon to share it with you.

RENT asks us a deceptively simple question: How do you measure a year? While trying to write this note, I have wondered how to measure a play. In production meetings, in rehearsal reports, in warm ups? In costume fittings, in arpeggios, in opening nights? In Justin’s never-ending penis jokes? There is no shortage of options. But like the citizens of Alphabet City, for me it always comes back to love.

The connection I feel to these people, the found family I have here among my production and design team, my business partner, and this crazy talented cast who somehow were willing to take a chance on The Intrepid Theatre is what I will carry with me in my heart going forward. If I measure my life in luck, love, and friendship, I am the wealthiest director in the world.

Thank you for coming on this adventure with all of us here at The Intrepid Theatre. Enjoy the show.
