A Note from the Director
It's been almost a year since I stepped foot in a live theater. It's difficult to think those words let alone commit them to paper. When all of this began, I don't think any of us, particularly in the New York Theater Community ever thought in our wildest dreams we'd still be locked out of live theater one year down the road. Yet here we are.
The production you are about to see is the very first "virtual production" that TDC NYC has ever done. We have sought to bring you as close to being in the theater with us as we could possible manage. This production features 52 live actors who pre-recorded this play under the strictest of COVID-19 safety measures.
The play was performed fully staged, though not in a traditional theater space. Most theaters in New York City are still closed and inaccessible. Instead we made a theater in my personal living room in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. This theater and this production was made with love by professional theater makers who miss very much sharing the sense of community that comes from doing live theater. Nothing will take its place, but we hope that this production is a worthy substitute.
Why THE DINING ROOM? This play by A.R. Gurney, chronicles the loss of a culture, and the traditions of a culture over a vast period of time. Though we have collectively and personally lost so much over the course of the past year in the way of traditions and normalcy, we hope this play goes a step towards getting some of it back. Welcome to the theater, please sit back and enjoy the show!
