I love a good theme. Whether it be found in a book, a movie...even an outfit, a room in a home, or a sensible party. I love ’em. Theming is its own special element of storytelling. Especially in theatre. Themes are the backbone of any great production, providing depth, meaning, and a connection to the audience that can transcend time and place. For me, a good theme is like a guiding light, illuminating a story and helping to create a more immersive and impactful experience for the audience. Themes can often challenge us, inspire us, and ultimately, help us see the world in a new and different way. Which brings us to the show you’re about to see. This production is a reminder that change is possible, even in the face of adversity, and that our actions can have a profound impact on those around us.
Footloose is a story that resonates deeply with me and with all of us here at The Colony Theatre, because it speaks to the power of perseverance, the importance of staying true to oneself, fighting for what you believe in, and the transformative nature of forgiveness. Many of you know of our recent fight to stay in our theatre. The challenge of that situation tested our resolve, pushed us to our limits, and often forced everyone involved to confront difficult emotions—not just those of us on our side of the table. What it also did was grow our family…and strengthen it immensely. Partnerships, friendships, people who stood beside us...people we consider family. We are so grateful to move forward, keeping the past in the past, and now with newfound, mended relationships emerging. We have learned that together, we are unstoppable…much like the characters will do on that stage for you today. Much of the theming in Footloose also centers on healing. And the truth is, healing can’t happen until forgiveness does. So, let the power of music and dance encompass you...and heal whatever you might be going through at this very moment. The arts have helped heal me more times than I can count.
My hope is that Footloose resonates with you, and reminds you of the power of forgiveness, resilience, and the human spirit. This production is a huge celebration of that. And I also hope that our theatre is a sanctuary for expression, a beacon of culture, and a home for artists and dreamers alike. Now THAT is a theme I can really get behind.
So let me end this by saying, “Welcome home.”
Thank you for joining us on this journey, and I hope you enjoy the show.
In gratitude, Heather Provost
