Take Two’s very first show was Into the Woods, the beloved Sondheim classic that warned about the harm we might do by trying to protect children from the world: “Careful the things you say. Children will listen.” Nearly eleven years later, our selection of Spring Awakening continues that theme – and it ups the stakes. In late nineteenth-century Germany, our teenaged characters are desperate to understand their feelings and their bodies, but they have nowhere to turn. The results, as you’re about to see, are disastrous.
Spring Awakening opened on Broadway in December 2006, and went on to win eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. A new revival by Deaf West Theatre just opened on September 27 to rave reviews. It’s almost certain that this won’t be the last revival. Spring Awakening’s infectious rock score and its fearless approach to dark subject matter continue to inspire audiences worldwide. We hope this performance will inspire you, too.
In line with the themes of tonight’s show, a portion of your ticket price will support KUTO (Kids Under Twenty One), a nonprofit that provides peer-to-peer focused programming throughout the greater St. Louis area. Their philosophy is simple: KUTO is teens helping teens help themselves. The organization’s crisis prevention, suicide intervention and postvention support services include community awareness, outreach and education, a youth-staffed telephone hotline, and more. We’re immeasurably proud to partner with them.
Thank you again for joining us, and for supporting our remarkable cast and crew. Enjoy the show – and tell your friends!
