 End Notes

To all of our military patrons:

We have tried to be as accurate as possible in our depiction of military life on an island in 1942.  However, with financial constraints and the scarce availability of certain items from that era, substitutions have been made.  We hope you will enjoy this wonderful story and forgive any aspects that are not totally accurate.

Notes from the Director:

Rodgers and Hammerstein were two of the most courageous writers of our time.  They were able to push the boundaries and affect social change with such musicals as; Carousel which addressed spousal abuse, Oklahoma which shed light on the effects of pornography, Flower Drum Song which showed the plight of the Chinese who escaped tyranny of Mao, Show Boat and Porgy and Bess which took on the plight of the African American in the post–Civil War era and South Pacific which showed people dealing with their feelings against interracial marriage.   Not only were their works significant but they were popular and continue to be produced today more than six decades later.  We are proud to present this timeless piece of musical theatre. The complications in this musical come from the inner conflicts faced by Nellie Forbush and Lieutenant Joe Cable as they are threatened by no one but their own prejudices, fears, and traditional way of thinking.  South Pacific draws its emotional power not merely from a love story, but from a cruel and unbending inner doubt.  We hope you will enjoy the journey that combines romance, comedy, and social commentary with songs we know you will be singing after you leave.
