 From the Director...

“Theatre contains a multitude of worlds, each requiring a unique set of creative and esoteric skills. These separate spheres of expertise combine and fuse, as a string of notes become a melody, and melodies intertwine to create a symphony. In this way, theatre creates a synergy – a result greater than the sum of its parts – a harmonious, living production,” (Shenan Arts, 2018).

As always, no words can begin to express the deep gratitude I feel for the many individuals who have come together to make this work possible. It is a privilege to collaborate with a team of such talented and dedicated professionals and students who share a passion for the stage. Our collective goal is to transport you for a few hours, allowing you to escape reality and transcend to an alternate world where life is enchanting, obstacles seem insurmountable, and every moment is both heartbreaking and heroic.

Performing Chicago at the high school level may initially raise eyebrows due to its mature themes of murder, adultery, and the relentless pursuit of fame. However,  after meticulous consideration, I believe Chicago offers a rich tapestry of educational elements. These include Bob Fosse-style choreography that emphasizes precision and some of the most iconic songs in the history of musical theater, providing students with an opportunity to engage deeply with the music. Moreover, the use of presentationalism on stage, where performers break the fourth wall and directly engage with the audience, encourages a deeper understanding of theatrical techniques. Finally, Chicago serves as a compelling platform for students to explore and dissect satire within the narrative, fostering critical thinking and artistic expression.

In this specially tailored rendition for teenagers, the Tony Award-winning Broadway classic unfolds the story of Roxie Hart, an ambitious young woman immersed in the world of jazz, who finds herself incarcerated in Cook County Jail for a murder she committed. Roxie's journey takes a compelling turn when she enlists the help of the cunning lawyer Billy Flynn to transform her infamy into stardom. Joined by the equally renowned inmate Velma Kelly, another murderer basking in the spotlight, the two compete for the public's attention in a dazzling courtroom spectacle filled with soul-stirring melodies, extravagant ensemble performances, dynamic choreography reminiscent of Fosse's style, and sharp, clever storytelling.

Chicago serves as a satire, aiming to highlight the absurdity of society's relentless pursuit of fame, regardless of moral implications. It exposes the darker aspects of human nature and critiques the exploitative nature of media. Additionally, the musical sheds light on the disparities within the justice system, particularly between the wealthy and the less privileged. While many perceive Chicago as a lively and entertaining production, it carries an underlying tone of sadness, disappointment, and desperation evident in its characters, including the ensemble. Portraying this complex dichotomy is challenging, yet these students excel in capturing its essence, and I couldn't be prouder of their performance.

Whether on stage, behind the scenes, in the musical pit, or in the audience seats, may this theatre space we share be a source of hope, love, belonging, and laughter for all who enter.

May you experience tonight’s performance with an open mind, joyful heart, and imaginative spirit.
