The Skyline High School Theatre program is built on the foundation of curricular offerings that include advanced study in both performance and technical theatre during the school day, supplemented by unique opportunities as part of an extracurricular season that includes two main stage productions, as well as two to three studio series productions. The goal of the main stage season is to provide shows that excite the students, engage the community and expose students to the complete canon of dramatic literature. Productions as part of the main stage series have included, The Miracle Worker, Hairspray, Moliere’s The Imaginary Cuckold, You Can’t Take It With You, Macbeth, Into the Woods, Aida, and A Piece of My Heart.
Each season also features two to three productions performed in Skyline’s experimental black box theatre space. The Studio Series is unique to the Ann Arbor Public Schools in that these productions are fully produced, designed and performed by students from the advanced theatre courses at Skyline. Past productions have included, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Anatomy of Gray, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. In addition Skyline seniors produce, design and direct a production in the spring of their graduation year.
Skyline High School Theare is active in the Michigan Educational Theatre Association, attending the annual state festival. The program performed The Crucible at the state festival. That production was then invited to perform at the International Thespian Festival,an annual theatre festival that celebrates excellence in secondary theatre. Skyline students have earned Superior ratings in Individual Events at both the state and national level.
Skyline Theatre collaborated with the Educational Theatre Association, The American Alliance for Theatre Education and the National Endowment for the Arts piloting the Model Cornerstone Assessments for the new National Core Arts Standards.
