Sidecar Theatre Co. has certainly taken me on quite a ride since its inception in January. We began with "The Civil War," a musically lush and dramatic song cycle that took us through years of turmoil, strife, and ultimately hope, in just two short hours. We recieved such wonderful feedback from that production, and we could not wait to get the ball rolling on our second!
Here it is! The time has come for our newest production, "Hairspray." And even though this show lets us take a trip back in time just like "The Civil War," the two could not be more different! Set in the early 1960's, "Hairspray" is full of catchy pop tunes and energetic dance moves. In this romantic tale of love and acceptance, the pleasanty plump Tracy Turnblad finds out that any girl, regardless of size, shape or color, can get the boy and change the world.
It sounds like fun, but don't let all those sequins and big hair fool you. This show has a great message and big heart. How many times have we all looked in the mirror and had doubts about who we are and what we look like. Sometimes, we let our self-image grow from the image that others have of us. Bullies abound in this day and age, and unfortunately, not all of them are as delightfully comedic as Amber and Velma Von Tussle. Let's all take a lesson from Tracy, Penny, Seaweed, Maybelle, and Edna - "you gotta love yourself from inside out."
I think you'll love this production, and the performers in it. Sidecar Theatre Co. prides itself on finding the best and brightest local talent. These performers are the cream of the Lubbock crop, and we hope to work with them again and again.
In the future you can expect top-notch dramas, comedies, children's theatre and musical theatre from Sidecar Theatre Co. Our next production brings Agatha Christie's famous detective Hercule Poirot to life on the Firehouse Theatre stage in "Black Coffee." Follow Poirot as he uncovers clue after clue in this thrilling murder mystery.
Look for our next children's theatre production "Go, Dog. Go!" at the 2014 Lubbock Arts Festival. Great for even our youngest patrons and based on P.D. Eastman's classic children's book, "Go, Dog. Go!" is the most fun you and your child can have at the theatre!
Next spring, get prepared to laugh your socks off. Sidecar Theatre Co. is excited to bring the hilarious Mel Brooks comedy "The Producers" to LHUCA. Join Bialystock and Bloom as they swindle, cheat and steal their way to the top of the New York City theatre scene. A plethora of outrageous characters rounds out the cast in this insanely funny musical romp.
We hope you'll join our company over and over again, whether it's in the audience, on stage, or as a show sponsor. No matter how you choose to support us, Sidecar Theatre Co. is committed to bringing you the best theatre Lubbock has to offer.
