I am writing this Director's Note at a sensitive time - in our history, in our society, in our world. And truth be told, I have started this message several times but have not been able to complete it without filling up with strong emotions and welling up with tears. This story is important. Not even for the obvious reasons of inclusion and love (even though these are VERY important). This story is about not being alone, knowing that no matter who you are and where you are in life, you will find your people. THIS is a message I hope my students and you, the audience, walk away from this show understanding. And the only way that we find our people or help others to find their people, is to embrace acceptance. The Prom sings you an "Acceptance Song," playing into the humor of aging Broadway stars attempting to convey this message. But as an educator and a mother and a human, I have seen that there is nothing funny when someone feels like an outsider who is not accepted. This is a gift that we can give each other, to accept one another for our true selves. Each and every one of my students are about to show you their true selves on stage, wrapped up in so much talent and passion, and I thank you for being here to support them and accept them as they tell you this story.
