Thank you so much for coming out to enjoy our first lower school musical!
When I was asked to lead a lower school musical last year, I was thrilled by the idea of building more theatre opportunities into our school. Directing a lower school musical opens up more chances for our students to engage with the arts. Lower school students have stepped into larger roles and responsbilities in a show, and our upper school students have been able to work as leaders back stage. All of these opportunities provide life-long learning for these students on stage, behind the stage, and in many other areas of their education and lives as well.
Seussical itself is such a delightful show. Not only will you be immersed in a Seuss-y story full of rhyme and lovable characters, you will see the largest of them all stand up for those who do not have a voice. Horton the Elephant gives of himself selflessly to protect the voiceless and teaches them how to speak for themselves. In the face of conflict and challenges, though Horton is soft of heart, he stands firm and does not give up. Hopefully, we will find that those who oppose him will be won over and that the Jungle of Nool will become a more just place to live.
Framing this story is the story of Jojo the Who, whose thinks have gotten her into trouble. With an imagination much bigger than her tiny Who body, Jojo hopes for something greater for herself and her town. Although she is met with skeptics and naysayers, she holds on stubbornly to her faith in something greater than herself. Hopefully, she will be able to win over her family to see the world in brighter color and with more hope than ever before.
Surrounding both the largest of larges and the smallest of smalls is a company of other kooky characters. Our students are so excited to bring these roles to life on stage tonight. And we are hopeful you walk away inspired, both by the amazing talent of our lower school students and how an evening of whimsy can make everything a bit brighter.
