Radium Girls - November 04 - November 06, 2021

Salem Academy

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

When I first started working here at the Academy, I created a master list of possible shows for us to do in the coming years. Radium Girls made it onto the list by default for being female-centric, having a solid story, and being something a high school could pull off. Then this past spring as the faculty was discussing Jan Term 2022 and Radium Girls as the common reading for the freshmen and sophomores, it was the obvious choice for this fall's show. And we have had a wonderful time putting it together!

Not only does this play highlight women, especially in an era where they were often cast to the shadows, it illuminates the stories of the women who stood up for themselves, fought against a flawed system and lack of adequate support, and who paved the way for the health and justice of future women. We ourselves are living in a time that is putting a sharper focus on health, leadership, and strong women. Hopefully the plight of these women before us will not be forgotten.

We here at Salem are so fortunate to be celebrating our own history this year as we mark the 250th anniversary of our founding. It's quite thematic that we are honoring out past and igniting our future this year (and every year) by keeping our students at the heart of what we do and instilling in them strong values, a hard work ethic, a justice-filled mindset, and hopefully a fun and safe environment in which to grow.

Please enjoy the show and thank you, as always, for your support!
