Setting
Setting is the Univeristy of Denmark. Modern Day.
Note from the Producing Artistic Director
Wait, University of Denmark? Modern Day? Wasn't Hamlet first performed in the early 1600s? The answers to those questions are yes, yes, and yes! If you are new to Rubber City Theatre (formerly Rubber City Shakespeare Company) you know that we do not regularly set Shakespeare's plays in the period in which they were written. To some this is blasphemy, to others they feel like they are able to connect to Shakespeare for the first time.
How can Hamlet, a 400 year old play still be relevant today? The universality of what Shakespeare has written makes this play accessible on multiple levels. The contemplation of life and death, relationships, and revenge are things that people confront daily. Why not show this in a modern context? That is exactly what we have done.
I hope you enjoy this production as much as we have enjoyed working on it.
Thanks,
Dane CT Leasure
