After a couple of years of more modern shows, I thought it was time to go back to the classics. This show is one of which I have been fond since I was a child. I remember being a middle school student and trying to reach the soaring notes of My Lord and Master. It has always been on my radar as something that I would like to direct, so when I stumbled upon an amazing collection of gorgeous costumes at Frenchy's in Sussex last year, I decided this was the year. The King and I is a beautiful show, and I am pleased to have gotten the chance to introduce it to this cast of young people.
I have had so much help along the way in bringing this show to our stage. Millie, Nick and Matt, thanks for all that you do every day - we make a great team! It was such a pleasure to work with Emma McEvoy on this show. As you can see from the Uncle Thomas ballet, she is an incredibly talented choreographer. It is special to have her join us on the production team as she graduated from RNS in 2012 and was a large part of our musical family as a student. Emma also appeared as one of the Royal Children in the 2001 RCS Netherwood production (see photo below). Andrea Evans joined our team this year as set designer. She produced a stunning set and was so much fun to work with! I'm hoping this can become a long-term partnership.
Thank you to the faculty and staff of the school for always helping where needed. Thank you to the parents for supporting their children through this process. In particular, thank you to Darlene Singh for the hours of sewing and general help that she provided in the final weeks fo rehearsals. Your time and support is very much appreciated. A special thank you to Hampton High School and Saint John Theatre Company for the use of costumes and set pieces, and to Suzanne Doyle-Yerxa for the costumes and price-less advice. I am lucky to have a mentor living right down the road!
