When I decided to produce Percy Jackson, it was the interesting melding of the past with the present that fascinated me. How does one bring the ancient world alive within this new electronic one? Through costumes and set choices, we attempted to meld the times together harmoniously. We set out to allow the chorus to help tell the story, as is the tradition of the Greek chorus. We added the light screen and various “plug in” elements to help tell the story with modern aspects of design as well.
For costumes, we decided that each god would select the time period that best fit their character. You will see a variety of times represented tonight. With so many students invested in their parts and also with crafting skills, you will see some uniques outfits this evening. The props crew spent many hours planning and executing details that they felt were important to help tell the story. Even though the audience might not notice the actual gold drachmas or the hand sewing on wings on the shoes, they are there.
The set reflects Percy's journey from boy to man and from child of Sally to son of Poseidon. This musical is a fabulous story about friendship and family, belonging, and finding your place in the world. Sometimes what we think are our greatest weaknesses can actually be our greatest strengths.
