A Chorus Line - June 14 - June 22, 2013

Pittsford Musicals

 Director's Notes

Let me take this opportunity to welcome you all to Pittsford Musical's production of A Chorus Line. As a new comer to this group I can tell you this: They know what they're doing. They're a well oiled machine! It's been a genuine pleasure to work with this cast, crew and production staff and I encourage all of you to take the plunge into theatre with this group...you won't regret it!

I've always wanted to direct A Chorus Line...since the day I first saw it. But how? At the community level it's hard. Maybe in NYC where unemployed dancers mill about the streets like hungry kittens but not here, in upstate NY, where dancers are scarce and good dancers almost impossible to find. Well, Pittsford Musicals took the chance...and it paid off. Turns out, the dancers were here all along...and they're very good. They've worked incredibly hard to produce a look that, while it tips it's hat to Michael Bennett and his brilliant Broadway choreography, is original and unique to this production. As a director, that's important to me and I hope it is to you as well.

During one rehearsal I asked the cast what the play was about. "The struggle for success" was one answer, "Desperation" was another, "What I did for love" was a third response. The fact is that the play is about each one of these dancers, each one of their struggles, and what each one of them was willing to do for the thing that they loved the most. But really, isn't this play about you, about what you have done for love, even though you've never danced a step in your life? It's about our willingness as human beings to endure great pain, climb every mountain, ford every stream (no wait, that's last year's show), give up and sacrifice for the one thing that we love. It might be a person, an art form or an idea...but it's the human thing to do, the noble thing to do, and it's something common to us all. So, dancer or not, this show is about you, your struggles and what you did for love. Enjoy!
