A Raisin in the Sun - October 17 - October 18, 2024

Pike Theatre Department

 Acknowledgements

First of all, thank you for coming out to support young, creative artists as they have worked hard since August to bring you this evening of live theatre. You are an integral part of supporting Theatre, specifically, and the Performing Arts, more generally, in our school and your community!

Lorraine Hansberry, the playwright of A Raisin in the Sun, was the first Black woman to have a play produced on Broadway. Hansberry was a prominent advocate for racial justice, fair housing, equality, and LGBTQ+ rights. The themes of A Raisin in the Sun and those issues she fought for are just as relevant today as they were then. Unfortunately, Ms. Hansberry died in 1965 at the age of 34.

A Raisin in the Sun is a play I read in high school and have seen numerous times since. In fact, I have taught this play in Theatre class every year for the past 22 years. However, this is my first time directing it!

I hope you enjoy this play as much as I do, and again, thank you for supporting the arts and young artists!
