The world of Dr. Seuss has been a comforting constant in all our lives. We are introduced to it at a young age and take it with us wherever we go. Dr. Seuss’s words are full of inspiration and motivation and have been used as a moral teaching tool for decades. But the most recognizable thing about Dr. Seuss is his nonsensical words and rhymes. His zany creations along with his rhyming scheme has delighted readers for years and continues to withstand the test of time.
Seussical is a show that lets us explore and stretch our imaginations. As adults, we forget what it means to think in “bright colors”. One of the greatest things as an educator is to witness when a child’s imagination runs wild. These students have had so much fun bringing these characters to life. From Horton the Elephant, to the Sour Kangaroo, each and everyone of them have taken these iconic characters and made them their own.
Watching them throughout this process has been such a joy to witness. This show from day one has come so naturally to these kids. It was never a struggle for them to get inside the minds of these characters. They all fell right into their roles like it was second nature.
I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am to have worked with these students and their parents. They have been extremely gracious, understanding, patient, and generous. I was lucky enough to be the recipient of a surprise baby shower that was thrown by the cast and their parents. Everyone pitched in to help and I can’t tell you how touched I was by their loving gesture. In that moment I realized how incredibly blessed I am to live in a community where everyone supports one another without a second thought. To feel that amount of love from everyone in that room was truly a magical moment for me and one I will never forget.
I think in a way, that is the theme that Dr. Seuss wanted to remind us of. A famous quote from Horton Hears a Who is “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” I think that truly is the what I felt that day surrounded by so much love and support. Everyone believed in me, just as Horton believed in the Who’s. I thank you all for believing in this production and letting its great “YOPP” be heard.
Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.
Today you are you! That is truer than true!
There is no one alive who is you-er than you!
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It's not.
A person's a person, no matter how small.
You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because
reality is finally better than your dreams.
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that
you learn, the more places you'll go.
I meant what I said and I said what I meant.
