Welcome to the Swamp!
This production of “Antigone” marks our first ever Varsity Theatre Class production and we are glad you have joined us this evening!
As with all maiden voyages, we have learned quite a bit; Things like auditioning earlier in the year could be beneficial, coming back memorized after Christmas break is a great goal, but requires lots of reminding, and overlapping schedules with the musical, one act, the spring show, and spring musical auditions may not be the best timing! Ha!
The biggest thing I have learned, however, is the incredible talent and work effort of these kids! Even with packed schedules and holidays and snow days, they have managed to bring these characters to life and tell their incredible stories!
Antigone will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the first play I participated in when I was in High School. I was a freshman, and I had the honor to serve as the sound technician for the show. That version, using the same script, was set in the 1940’s and we used swing music to drive the action. I think it is a testament to the universality of this story that we can set the same characters and lines in a modern-day southern swamp and still learn the same lessons. In fact, deciding on a setting was one of the hardest parts of the show. Some of the settings we considered were the Oval Office, outer space, a circus or even a High School. When you have a great narrative with timeless truths, it will ring true whenever and wherever!
Now, I invite you to listen and learn from a girl who fully understands what it means to stand firm in her beliefs and morals, even if it means going against those in authority, even if it means being willing to sacrifice everything.
