Roald Dahl wrote books with the intent to captivate the imaginations of children. He had a way of making a parody of adulthood through the lens of a child’s eyes while genuinely capturing the reality and magic of childhood. Perhaps that is why Dahl’s stories continue to entertain people of all ages still to this day. His stories are filled with dark, cruel antagonists and harsh environments, yet balanced with whimsical, imaginative, and strong main characters – and Matilda is no exception!
Matilda is, simply put, a story about an extraordinarily clever young girl who, with the help of her classmates, favorite teacher, a lot of books, a fantastical imagination, and a little bit of magic, stands up to her cruel and ignorant parents, as well as the horribly abusive Headmistress, Agatha Trunchbull. It’s truly a “David and Goliath” tale of the seemingly weaker underlings triumphing over the bullies.
Beneath the lights, the music, and the terror of The Trunchbull, there is a deeper truth that speaks to us all: “Nobody else is going to put it right for me; nobody but me is going to change my story.” This show has served as a wonderful testament to both our students and our directing team alike, that we all have the power within us to change the world. This story reminds us that no matter how big or small you are, no matter your upbringing, or what anyone thinks of you, you have what it takes to change the world.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our Company OGP families who have shared their most precious gifts with us - their immensely talented children. We are humbled and honored by your endless support of our program. Thank you to all those who worked so many tireless hours to make our stage upgrades. OG Peeps, we thank you for sharing in the joy that comes from the excitement, pride, and confidence that the arts give our children. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to our own families who sacrifice to allow us to do what we love. And to everyone who has joined us here for the magic of Matilda, Jr. tonight: We hope that this show reaches you where you are, and that it reminds you of the power you hold within yourself.
