The Lion King Jr - July 28 - July 30, 2022

Nathan Hale School

 End Notes

Director's Note

Growing up, The Lion King was my favorite movie. It was my Saturday morning tradition; get up, get a bowl of cereal and sit on the couch for endless replaying of the movie. (Bless my poor mother ears). It got to the point of me repeating every single line of every single character; matching expression, tone and eventually choreography. I was ready to be cast in any and all roles. (Again, my poor mother who had to endure these performances and react as if this was her first time, great acting mom). I always wanted to play the role of Timon; funny, witty, no filter and carefree. As I got older, I related more to Rafiki; guiding others, teaching connections of life and the world, and wanting the best for my community.

This show has always been on my heart to direct butI had specific visions for the show. In order to put this production on, I needed a community. Nothing great is done alone. I couldn't more grateful for my Creative Team. From their patience, guidance with children and dedication to ensuring the production and camp itself is enjoyable for all students. I thank them immensely.

Our cast has work from 9:00-1:00pm, Monday through Friday, for four weeks only. Our cast was off-book by week two, full choreographed and running the show as if it were performance day by week three. In less than fifteen days, students memorized lines and learned songs/lyrics in three languages. Our cast has been phenomenal; making strong connections and building a sense of community.

The word of this camp has been Ensemble. Our staff and students have worked together to create this awesome living piece of art and that alone has brought this vision full circle. What we give into this world is what we receive; it may not return this hour or tomorrow or even next month. What we can say is that creating positive loving spaces that can plant seeds of growth, will always give us blooming life and opportunities.

Please take in all that was created by loving hands and enjoy our show.
