Hello and welcome to Mount Pleasant High School's production of the hit Broadway musical, The Prom!
This performance is the culmination of four months of hard work by our student cast, crew, pit, and tech members. These students come from all different walks of life, with different experiences, personalities, identities, ethnicities, skill sets, and senses of humor. We celebrate it and allow them all to thrive at their own pace. It's what makes a village, a village, and a community, one that can grow.
This is the message of The Prom - no matter what, you get to define who you are and live your life that way and no one should make you feel bad or make you think you're less of a person because of it.
Life was a lot different when we chose this show for our musical last summer. But what hasn't changed is the universal message of acceptance and love that dates back centuries and one that I think we often forget or miscommunicate to others because we get so caught up in the noise and distractions of the world that we often forget to take a moment, breath, and remember that the person sitting next to you is going through their own thing right now and how you deal with them and listen matters.
That's one thing I think we could all do just a little bit better - listen. Truly listen because within the words that people speak are easter eggs with meaning that you miss unless you listen. One person's "Hi how are you" is another person's "please love me because I feel sad". It's how you listen and define it that's most important.
So, before I go too far down the rabbit hole of seriousness that MPHS Drama is known for, I'll stop and celebrate the fact that THE PROM is one of the most fun experiences you'll have. It's charming and funny, and the songs are catchy and will live in your brain for months to come. So, I hope you enjoy it!
I want to thank all the students for giving 150% every day, even on days when you felt like you could only give 90%, you were giving 150% of that 90%. We commend you for that!
I also want to thank the amazing MPHS Administration for seeing the value in drama and the shows that we do and allowing us to do them. I'd also like to thank the Drama Staff for their dedication and work with the students. Over the past 14 years, you've shaped this program into one of Delaware's finest!
We owe a ton to Erin Mullen, a longtime MPHS teacher who loves theater and helped us secure prom dresses and teacher prom pictures! Thank you to Taria Pritchett for asking our drama students to be part of MPHS Greek Knight, an amazing annual event that we will be at every year as long as she has us!
A huge THANK YOU to our MPHS Drama Families! You are the rock we rely on to get us through the day. We appreciate and honor you!
And thank you, the audience, for taking time out of your day/evening to support high school theater. It's integral to the success of students and we appreciate you joining in the celebration.
Thank you and enjoy the show.
