I would be remiss if I didn't begin by thanking the production team (especially Craig and Austin for steering the directorial ship in my maternal absence), my cast, crew, and their families, and of course my family for being so supportive and flexible throughout this creative process.
When Craig, our costume designer, stumbled upon this show and threw it in the ring for consideration, I was initially rather dubious. Elsewhere did not fall under the umbrella of plays I would typically be drawn to, but as I read it I found myself being won over not only by its humor and heart felt, approachable content, but largely by its central theme- change is crucial to living a fulfilling life! As someone who spent the majority of her teens and early 20s trying to stagnate in a misperception of perfection rather than embracing the magical transformative mess of experience, I was eager to explore this theme with my actors and hopefully help them embrace the massive changes on the horizon as they finish high school and fully enter adulthood in a way I didn't- boldly and with excitement.
In ways, this has been the easiest show I have directed thus far, which seemed like divine timing given the changes my family is currently experiencing as we welcome our son into the world. My prayer for him, my daughter, and my students is that they would control their own lives; make their own choices; learn; change; that the world would pass through them and over them until they glow with the light of their experiences. That the passage of time would write itself on their skin. That they would become the person they want to become because they grow!
Enjoy the show!
