Why the Black Box Theater
While our 840-seat PAC offers the grandeur of a traditional theater space, our black box theater provides a distinct and meaningful experience for both performers and the audience. With a smaller budget allocated to each play, the black box allows us to use resources more effectively, channeling funds toward quality production elements rather than managing a larger space.
The black box also ensures that the crucial connection between actor and audience remains strong, even with smaller audiences. Unlike the PAC, where a less full theater can feel distant and affect an actor’s energy and engagement, the black box fosters a close, immersive environment. This proximity enriches both the actors’ performances and the audience’s experience, making every seat feel like part of the story.
Finally, the black box setting mirrors most professional theaters across the country, providing students with real-world skills in a venue that emphasizes adaptability, technical skill, and creative freedom—qualities essential for budding artists and technicians.
