When my daughter, Vanessa, first asked me to co-direct “The Fox on the Fairway” I was very excited to be able to work with her on a show again. It has been many years since I directed her in “The House of Blue Leaves” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Having the opportunity to watch her direct a show would be a bit of a thrill for me since she has been watching me direct since she was a little girl. It has been a great experience. Vanessa helped gather a wonderful cast of actors for this show and has done a tremendous job in putting together all of the technical crews, publicity and everything else that goes along with being “in charge.” I helped of course, but much of the hardest work and most of the credit for this show belongs to her and the cast and crew she helped assemble.
“The Fox on the Fairway” is meant to honor the ancient traditions of farce and bring it into the twenty-first century. Using the golf and country club as our modern society’s upper class “refuge of choice,” Ken Ludwig has adapted much of the traditional nature of farce, making fun of the “upper class” through outright mockery of their stuffy ways. The endings of farces often appear completely contrived and tie things neatly and happily together through unbelievable coincidence.
The actors who appear before us today have really taken to the ancient and noble tradition. They have been able to adapt their styles of acting to fit this time-honored tradition which goes back thousands of years. They realize that laughter and comedy are timeless and important to maintaining sanity in a world that sometimes seems to have gone mad. I thank my daughter, Vanessa, and this wonderful cast and crew for giving me the opportunity to help bring this play to life. It has been a great opportunity to watch a talented young director work with a talented group of actors; and have a fun time doing it. So, relax, sit back and get ready for a belly-laughing good time. After all, it’s a farce!!!
