We are so thrilled with our choice of musical this year and how beautifully it fits our student talent. Most people who have heard of Hairspray think first of upbeat music, fun period dancing, engaging leading characters and colorful costumes. There is something so satisfying about a story line which features an atypical, heavier leading lady who wins the heart of the heart-throb. The message of looking beyond the shallow surface of beauty is a powerful and timely one. What drew me to the musical when I first saw it on Broadway, however, was a theme even more intricate to the fabric of our culture and our heritage—the struggle for equality. What many might not realize about this show is that its core message is of acceptance and integration. Set in the sixties, Hairspray has incredibly powerful production numbers which feature a strong African American/Black presence. Our nation needs to never forget the injustices done to people of this land—and we need consistent reminders to push us forward on this quest. This musical delivers on that message. Rest assured that you will be moved not only in spirit, but in body as well! Our hope is that you will leave dancing in the aisles—literally. So, thank you for supporting us so faithfully over the years—welcome to another journey with us on the Marietta Performing Arts Stage. I am confident that you will exit our theatre space energized, enriched and excited to return yet again. Personal thanks go out to Sterling and Kacy. These two artists have had a profound impact in my artistic life. To my assistant director Marcel Benoit III and Stage Manager Melesa Bennet Wilson; Thank you two students for all that you have done in help create this production. To my boosters; Lori, Yolanda, Melody and Sharon thannk you so much for all of your volunteer work into this dept. You help bring us to a higher level of professionalism. To Marc for being an absolute pleasure to work with and lastly, to my students. As you are now aware there is truly nothing I would not do to help you succeed in your artistic life and knowledge. It is not easy having to fill a acting role when it was never planned to do so. Life gives us challenges and I wanted to make sure you had your dream fulfilled of doing this show. I do this for you so that you never feel unsupported and in turn you make me so very proud and fulfilled to be your teacher., Director and now fellow actor.
Shine on and enjoy the show!
