Director's Note

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." – Helen Keller

There is something to be said about a great partnership. Dolly Levi, our main character, seems to meddle in the lives of others to bring about “perfect” partnerships. A synergy in business, relationships, and adventures. Hello Dolly is less about human beings finding their identities with someone else, but what potential power two good entities teamed together can have.

This year’s production is the culmination of 4 years working with students to develop theatre and artistic leaders. This year we see many of our seniors stepping into roles within the artistic team.   We had student leaders serving and teaching in choreography, vocals, design, and acting. As a Theatre Arts Educator, it is the culmination of my desires and effort to have the privilege to work with such talented artists to bring to the stage Hello Dolly. Jessica Erkkila, having spent many years studying dance and learning from Patrick MacDonald, has stepped into a leading role as Student Choreographer. Much of what you see on stage tonight has “her hand” in it. Grace Colletti has been the diligent, patient backbone of the show as she helps to create the space (as stage manager) in which the rest of us get to play. Maya Rogers, having spent time in our own high school choral program, under Jason Rutledge, and with the Santa Fe’s Young Voices, has helped to work with the cast as an Assistant Music Director. These are just a few of the student leaders who have made this show a truly collaborative process.

We have also seen an amazing teaming with the community of families in our show. Parents like Scott Doebling and Tracy Erkkila have given their Saturdays to partner with the students in learning how to build a set along with our own Duane Smith Manager Ryan Daly. Our boosters have diligently worked to provide food for the cast and crew as we have prepared for the opening night.

What you see prepared for you tonight is 4 years of work building a team of artists passionate about their work and passionate about each other. Thank you for your time and presence as you let us lead you through the magical life of Dolly Levi. Like theatre, it’s a lot of love and pieces of chaos.
