The Canterbury Tales - October 18 - October 20, 2018

Los Alamitos High School

 End Notes

I had never read The Canterbury Tales before this. The idea of medieval literature scared me. Pre-renaissance...how much fun could that really be?

When I stumbled upon this script, it was as I was looking for a show that had a larger cast, and had opportunities for both my student designers and my actors to be able to play, have say in moments and ideas, rather than a show completely dictated by the structure of the script.

Imagine my surprise when I read this script and found myself laughing from the beginning. The idea of what was entertainment in a medeival, pre-technology, disconnected world was very intriguing to me.

My philosophy is that since this is educational theatre, students should be involved in every element of the production from table to stage. This script would be perfect to reinforce this idea.

As soon as we announced the show, my student design team was assembled, and the ideas flying from them were absolutely astounding. The idea of this show being set in a medieval/renaissance tavern, with all props only being something that could be found in a tavern gave them opportunities to help to create the characters in the story using design elements.

The actors have been given a bit more free reign than what they normally get in a mainstage production. We have a larger than normal cast; a cast that consists of not only seasoned mainstage performers, but 5 mainstage debuts, and 6 mainstage returners who are performing large roles for the first time. This amazing group of student actors are learning from each other, training each other, taking risks, and making bold choices. It has been an honor to work with them and watch them create and grow as performers.

This is the largest technical crew the department has ever had with over 50 technicians, designers, and other crew, I am ecstatic that so many students are involved in this production.

We hope that as you enjoy the tales from Chaucer's book, and you agree that our mission statement of creating professional-level work with students is evident on stage. As we continue to grow the Los Alamitos Drama Department, we hope that you will continue to join us and see what these amazing students are capable of.

Thank you, and enjoy the show!
