The Outsiders - January 23 - January 25, 2025

Los Alamitos High

 DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Last year, I began looking around for the season for this year, and I started to really listen to the conversations that kids were having around me.

The Outsiders Musical had just opened, and when we talked about that being a new show, the instant excitement and enthusiasm over the source material was beyond anything I had ever witnessed. What? You mean that you read a book in school that you actually LIKED? They didn’t actually know that a stage version even existed!

So, when the show was announced at the banquet, the literal SCREAMING that occurred from our returning students and the out-and-out anger from our graduating seniors was wall-shaking.

So, off we went.  It has been a joy bringing these well-known and beloved characters to life, and watching these young performers cut their acting teeth on a piece that is such a big part of their schooling experience.

We cut the need for scene changes by staging the entire show in the “empty lot” as a reference to both how the greasers live and how they are perceived. My idea was a cross between a Les Miserable barricade and the junkyard from CATS, all to make the sad, abandoned, and neglected world of the greasers come to life. I am so incredibly proud of our student design teams who have spent untold hours working and creating this world.

We hope that you enjoy reliving the gold world of Ponyboy, Johnny, and the rest of the Curtis “family.”

Thank you for helping to keep live theatre, and the arts alive at Los Alamitos High School.
