Thorthon Wilder said, "I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being." This is especially true for Liberty Theatre's thirteenth production, Next to Normal. With its extreme highs and uncompromising lows, this musical is a departure from what our local audiences have grown to love from our theatre company. But, not surprisingly, this edgy and unapologetic musical resonated loudly with our students and theatre patrons.
Next to Normal's portrayal of mental illness, self-discovery, and the struggles of moving towards recovery and being "better than before" is probably a familiar one for many people in our society who are afraid to talk about their problems or seek help.
It is our sincere hope that this production makes you feel, think, doubt, soar, laugh, cry, hurt, fear, but most importantly, ACT - Create an opportunity to generate open dialog about these issues, whose stigmas unfortunately endure. For they are our friends, family members, neighbors, and co-workers; THEY are US.
We are truly humbled to be sharing this journey.
Day after day,
We'll find the will to find our way
Knowing that the darkest skies will someday see the sun!
