Greetings!
In 2005, I was cast as a few ensemble roles in this seemingly unknown musical. I was upset that I didn’t get a lead role but I accepted the roles anyway and jumped into a musical that I knew very little bit about. Little did I expect that I would fall in love with a musical and its story as much as I did with HONK! The songs were infectious, the characters were lively, and the story was a beauty.
Since then, I knew that I wanted to direct this musical, not only because of the fun that I knew it could cause for others, but for the story that it tells. I was attached to Ugly because of his struggle with fitting in. I think many people have moments like this, but the story didn’t just show his struggle, it showed where he ended. I don’t want to give away too much but if we know the story, we know that he finds his place in the end.
Like Ugly, we often find ourselves looking for our place, where we fit into it all. The Lord has a place for us all, in his loving care. Christ has a place for us all. In Titus 2 verse 11, Paul writes to Titus, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people” (ESV). Christ welcomes all that repent and turn to Him and for me and for many of our students, this is where we find our place.
As everyone sings at the end, "Just belive in yourself, Don't be left on the shelf feeling that all hope is dead and gone and you may find in your own way You're a Swan!"
HONK!
Mr. Daniel Thayer
